Lonesome City

On that crisp sunny day
When the leaves lay on the ground
I first saw her face
And I thought my treasure found
Looked round that lonesome city
Wishing she could here my call
On down this winding highway
Move past it all
Later on a winter's night
Saw her smile in that basement light
In the darkness she shined so bright
The words she spoke made my heart take flight
Looked round that lonesome city
Wishing she could here my call
On down this winding highway
Move past it all
Down the stairs to a thick locked door
Thought I heard her voice inside
Chasing a ghost my my heart sore
Let my search grow citywide
Looked round that lonesome city
Wishing she could here my call
On down this winding highway
Move past it all
Saw her with a new man who looked just like me
That finally set my heart free
Fell for a girl with the same first name
Got lost in her games
Looked round that lonesome city
Wishing she could here my call
On down this winding highway
Move past it all

Herbert Park
06:26
|

First I sat in the embrace of a sylvan tunnel
But that didn't suit my soul
So I moved on, on to newly mown meadows
Where the wind-swept willows wept
And the burning of the setting sun
Set my heart to flaming
In the distance I saw Wicklow mountain peaks
Past the chimneys of the city-scape
And it set my mind to dreaming
Dreaming of far off places
Where unknown lovers waited for me
And the summer was never-ending
Oh but life cascaded down on me
Like a high, high waterfall
And I knew that one day parallel lines would cross
And I might have it all
People walked by
Caught in their own dreams
Trane's horn sang of rainy days done
The ground was littered with unwritten love letters
Children played their youthful games
The old men fed the birds
While the young man wrote his sorrowful stanzas
About a painful cruel world
Tree branches entangled each other
And held tightly like two lover's hands
Synchronicity followed my pencil
And I was born again
Inspiration flew on the wings of a magpie
And I remembered better days
Before Change came in his black robe
And scared my dreams away

Mary and the Soldier
04:08
|

Oh come all ye lads of high renown
Who will hear of a fair young maiden
As she roved out on a summer's day
For to view the soldiers parading
Oh they marched so bold and they looked so gay
The colours flying and the bands did play
It caused young Mary for to say
I'll wed ye my gallant soldier
As she viewed the soldiers on parade
And as they stood at their leisure
Mary to herself did say:
"At last I've found my treasure"
But oh so cruel my parents must be
To banish my darling so far from me
I'll leave them all and I'll go with thee
My bold, undaunted soldier
Oh Mary dear your parents love
I pray don't be unruly
For when you're in a foreign land
Believe me you'll rue it surely
And perhaps in battle I might fall
From a shot from an angry cannon ball
And you so far from your daddy's hall
Be advised by a gallant soldier
Oh I have fifty guineas* in bright gold
Likewise a heart that's bolder
And I'd leave them all and I'll go with you
My bold, undaunted soldier
So don't say no and let me go
And I will face the daring foe
We'll march together to and fro
And I'll wed ye my gallant soldier
And when he saw her loyalty
And Mary so true hearted
He said: "my darling married we'll be
And nothing but death will ever part us
And when we're in a foreign land
I'll guard ye darling with my right hand
In the hopes that god might stand a friend
For Mary and her gallant soldier"
*A guinea was a unit of currency equal to ten pounds.
